Oberkampf is where people end up when they have compared everything else and looked at the price. It is presented as the budget option, which is accurate and misleading at the same time.
It is cheaper. But that is not the main reason to stay here, and cost is not what you are really trading.
What the position gives
Space for the same money. The buildings are later than those in the Marais, the streets are wider, and the rooms are bigger at a comparable rate. If you are two people who will spend time in the room, or a family who needs a second one, this is where the arithmetic changes.
A neighbourhood that is not about tourism. Oberkampf, République and the streets around the Canal Saint-Martin are residential and young. There are supermarkets, pharmacies, laundrettes — the infrastructure of living rather than visiting. For a stay longer than three nights, that matters.
Evenings that belong to the city. The rue Oberkampf and the rue Jean-Pierre Timbaud are among the liveliest streets in Paris after dark, and the crowd is largely Parisian. You are not eating in a place that exists for people like you.
Transport. République is a major interchange — five metro lines. You are not far from anything in time, even if you are far in distance.
What it takes
You will use the metro. This is the real trade, not price. Most of what you came to see is twenty to thirty minutes away door to door. Do that four times a day for four days and it adds up — in time, in fatigue, in the friction of stairs with luggage or a pushchair.
The walk back at night. Fine, but longer than you think after a long day.
Noise, in the other direction. The Marais is loud at the weekend. Oberkampf is loud most nights, later, and closer to street level. A room facing the rue Oberkampf is a different product from one facing the courtyard, and the difference is not always visible when booking.
It is not picturesque. If your image of Paris is the one on postcards, you will not find it here. The area is handsome in a plain, working way, not in a photographed one.
Where the establishments sit
Several of the market's hotels are in this band — Cosmos Hôtel Paris and Le Petit Oberkampf on and around the rue Jean-Pierre Timbaud, Ginette à la Folie on the rue de Malte, Les Jardins du Marais on the rue Amelot, Hôtel Marais Bastille on the boulevard Richard-Lenoir.
The name Marais Bastille is worth reading carefully: the boulevard Richard-Lenoir is in the 11th, east of the Marais proper. Closer to Bastille than to Saint-Paul. That is not a criticism — it is a position, and it is a good one for anyone prioritising space over the walk.
Who this does not suit
If you are in Paris for two nights, do not come here. The time you spend travelling will exceed anything you save.
If you are here for a specific central appointment — a conference near the Louvre, a morning at the Musée d'Orsay — the daily commute will undo the logic.
If you want the Paris of the postcards outside your window, this is the wrong neighbourhood. That is a legitimate thing to want.
